Do you accumulate fat at your lower abs?
Do you have more fat on your upper back, and you have a roundish face?
Do you get angry or agitated easily?
Do you crave for salty foods for some reason?
Do you also have skinny legs and a flat butt?
If the answer to most of the questions above is yes, then you are a highly stressed person. As mentioned before in previous articles, people who are highly stressed are suffering from excessive cortisol production.
Our body does not different between emotional stress or physical stress. When a person goes through chronic stress for a prolonged period, they will start to lose muscle mass around their legs and butt and fat will buildup around the lower abs. The fat will look like a pouch sagging from the navel down.
So what do you do if you’re this type of person?
The first thing I would advice is to NOT do any intensive exercises. Yes, that’s right. A Tabata or HIIT workout will work against these type of people. The thing you want to do is to go out and have long walks for 20-30 minutes. It will definitely calm you down and lower your stress level.
Since you are also losing muscle mass, you might want to start consuming more good quality protein like fish, meat and dairy from whole foods. You should also increase consumption of natural fats like avocado, olive oil, salmon, etc.
Your liver and gut would need the required micro-nutrients to start working optimally again. So eat more big leafy green vegetables and try to avoid anything that causes bloating or gas.
Lastly, avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates at all cost and remember to sleep well every night.
Once the symptoms of stress are managed and reduced, then you can start working on getting your fitness level back by slowly and progressively add the level intensity.
Stress kills people, so kill stress before it kills you.
